A viral video has taken the internet by storm after a group of U.S. tourists accidentally landed in Tunisia instead of the French Riviera city of Nice.
The confusion reportedly began with the phrase “to Nice,” which, when spoken aloud, can sound almost identical to “Tunis.” For travelers unfamiliar with European geography, the similarity may have caused a mix-up that ended thousands of miles away, across the Mediterranean in North Africa.
The tourists claimed that the booking may have been mishandled at Rome Fiumicino Airport by a Tunisair employee. However, many observers noted that the boarding pass and ticket counter checks should have provided clues long before boarding, raising questions about how the mistake went unnoticed.
Ultimately, the travelers ended up in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, sparking widespread amusement online. Some social media users joked that it might have been easier if people said “Tunis, capital of Tunisia” rather than just “Tunis in Africa” to avoid confusion.
While the travelers were initially bewildered, the internet had no shortage of reactions, ranging from playful memes to genuine sympathy for the group. Many pointed out that such blunders are more common than one might think, given how many global destinations have similar-sounding names.
The story quickly became a trending topic, with users sharing their own near-miss travel experiences. As one commenter put it: “At least they still got Mediterranean weather—just on the wrong coast.”
