United Airlines’ investment arm, United Airlines Ventures, announced that it has invested in Astro Mechanica, a young aerospace company focused on developing next-generation airframes and propulsion systems for supersonic jets.
The move highlights a renewed industry push toward reviving ultra-fast passenger travel, two decades after the retirement of the iconic Concorde in 2003. That marked the end of an era of commercial supersonic flights, which had spanned 27 years with Air France and British Airways.
Efforts to bring back supersonic travel have been supported by U.S. regulators in recent years. The Trump administration had called on the FAA to reconsider the decades-old 1973 ban on supersonic flights over land, provided that new aircraft can avoid generating disruptive sonic booms at ground level.
Still, environmental groups remain critical, noting that supersonic jets consume significantly more fuel per passenger than today’s subsonic aircraft.
United Airlines has previously shown interest in this sector, most notably through its 2021 order of 15 Boom Supersonic Overture aircraft. The company did not disclose the size of its new investment in Astro Mechanica.
