Sani Şener: “I Buried You, But Didn’t Pour Concrete Over”

While I was working at Skopje Airport, we decided to

While I was working at Skopje Airport, we decided to terminate the contract of an expat employee due to unsatisfactory performance and conduct. We paid him all his dues and ended his employment properly. However, around that time, the EUR/TRY exchange rate in Türkiye suddenly fluctuated, and the amount he received became quite valuable in Turkish Lira terms. To make matters worse, this person falsely complained about us to our CEO, Mr. Sani Şener.

Mr. Sani Şener, a respected figure in aviation, was furious and directed his anger at me. It was the first time I had experienced his wrath. I was on vacation, and for almost two weeks, I couldn’t shake it off. During that time, I made a Plan B in my head for the first time, thinking about what I would do if I were fired or decided to resign.

Making that plan gave me some relief, but not being able to explain myself to our CEO really weighed on me. Luckily, two weeks later, Mr. Şener came to Macedonia. I explained the situation, and finally, I felt at peace. On the other hand, when he heard the praise about us from high-ranking government officials, he felt proud and recognized me as the general manager.

When I said, “Mr. Sani, I couldn’t enjoy a summer vacation because you buried me,” he replied with his characteristic humor:
“I buried you, but didn’t pour concrete over.”

What he meant was, “Yes, I was angry with you, but I’m aware of your efforts. I don’t discard people so easily.”

The person who tried to harm us with lies expected that we’d suffer or even lose our jobs, but instead, we came out of this even stronger.

Goodness and honesty always win.
