The MC-21-310, the first passenger aircraft made entirely from domestically produced Russian components, successfully completed its maiden test flight on June 26, 2025. The aircraft took off from Zhukovsky Airport (ZIA) near Moscow and landed at the same airport after a four-hour flight.
The original version of the MC-21 first flew in 2017. However, following Russia’s military operation in Ukraine in early 2022, the defense industry conglomerate Rostec decided to replace all foreign components on the aircraft with locally manufactured equivalents.
The most critical change was the replacement of the engines: the previously used Pratt & Whitney engines were substituted with Russian-made PD-14 high-bypass turbofan engines.
The certification process for the MC-21-310 has been delayed several times, with current plans aiming for completion by summer 2026.
Russia’s state airline, Aeroflot, is expected to receive 108 MC-21-310 aircraft between the end of 2026 and 2030.
A similar domestic production initiative is also underway for another key Russian civil aviation project, the Superjet SJ-100.
