Airbus, one of the world’s leading aerospace companies, has announced a leadership change within its Commercial Aircraft division. Lars Wagner, currently serving as CEO of MTU Aero Engines AG, will become the new CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, effective January 1, 2026, succeeding Christian Scherer. To ensure a smooth and seamless transition, Wagner is set to join Airbus in early November 2025. Christian Scherer will continue in his current role until December 31, 2025.
Aviation Leader at 50: Lars Wagner
Lars Wagner has been the CEO of Germany-based MTU Aero Engines AG since January 2023. Having joined MTU in 2015, Wagner held several strategic roles, including Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President for OEM operations, before being appointed CEO. Notably, Wagner began his aviation career at Airbus, where he held various leadership roles in Bremen, Hamburg, and Toulouse.
He holds degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering and also an MBA, further strengthening his leadership capabilities in the business world.
A Farewell to Christian Scherer from Airbus
After more than 40 years of service at Airbus, Christian Scherer will retire at the end of 2025. Known for his instrumental contributions to the company’s global success, Scherer played a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of Airbus’s Commercial Aircraft division. With his departure, Airbus bids farewell to a respected and long-serving aviation executive.
