Jeju Air Crash: Pilot Shut Down the Wrong Engine

The crash involving Jeju Air at Muan Airport in December,

The crash involving Jeju Air at Muan Airport in December, which resulted in the deaths of 179 people, has been attributed to pilot error. The Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, operating under South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, presented its interim report to the families of the victims.

According to the report, the pilot mistakenly shut down the left engine, which was still functioning, instead of the right engine that had sustained serious damage due to a bird strike.

This incorrect action led to a total loss of power, disabling both the engines and the main systems of the aircraft.

As a result, the flight data recorders, cockpit voice recorders, and the landing gear systems also failed to function.

Following the crash, both engines were sent to the manufacturer for detailed analysis in May. The investigation found no technical malfunction in either engine.

Meanwhile, the Jeju Air pilot union strongly criticized the report, claiming there was a deliberate attempt to place blame on the pilot and firmly rejected this approach.
