Before every departure, a detailed flight plan is prepared and submitted to the relevant aviation authorities. This plan clearly defines when the aircraft will depart and which airspace it will pass through. In other words, once airborne, pilots cannot simply fly in whichever direction they choose. Aviation is built on planning and discipline.

Flight plans are reviewed by Eurocontrol and other air navigation service providers, and flight permissions are granted accordingly. Possible delays or entering an airspace earlier than planned are closely monitored, as they can create a chain reaction affecting many other flights. Depending on traffic density, airspace is regulated dynamically and in real time.

Sometimes a delay of just five minutes at departure can turn into a one-hour wait.

It is completely natural for passengers to feel frustrated when waiting for long periods inside the aircraft. However, in many cases, this wait is due to the effort to avoid missing a departure clearance that could be issued at any moment. If passengers are taken back into the terminal and dispersed into different areas, gathering everyone again, re-boarding the aircraft, and completing preparations would cause significant delays. This could result in missing the current clearance and having to wait for the next available slot.

Aircraft do not always fly the same routes. A delay on one route can impact subsequent flights as well. That is why on-time departure is critical for airlines. To ensure an aircraft departs as scheduled, hundreds of people work in close coordination, including ground crews, pilots, operations teams, control towers, and air traffic control units are all in constant communication.

Of course, aviation has unavoidable realities: unexpected technical issues or weather conditions that may be anticipated but cannot be controlled. Some situations are entirely beyond our control. Still, all flight and ground teams do everything possible to minimize these impacts and secure that critical departure clearance.

So next time you find yourself waiting a little longer on board, remember the enormous effort happening behind the scenes.

Safe flights.
