The Success Story of Sabiha Gökçen Airport

Sabiha Gökçen Airport, the gateway from Istanbul’s Asian side to

Sabiha Gökçen Airport, the gateway from Istanbul’s Asian side to the world, has ranked among Europe’s top 10 busiest airports for the past three to four years.

Just 20 years ago, the area was considered remote and underdeveloped. Today, it stands among Europe’s most prominent airports.

The airport plays a significant role in employment and contributes strongly to the national economy. In the coming years, it is expected to further strengthen its position as one of Europe’s key airports.

So how did this transformation happen?

Without a doubt, Pegasus Airlines has been the driving force behind Sabiha Gökçen’s rise. Just as Turkish Airlines played a major role in developing Atatürk Airport and Istanbul Airport, a similar process unfolded here.

AJet: The New Major Player

While Pegasus Airlines positioned the airport as a major hub, the new era has been shaped by AJet. The competition between the two airlines has elevated the airport—and will continue to do so. The new routes and vision of both Pegasus and AJet are expected to contribute significantly to Sabiha Gökçen’s future growth.

What Were the Key Factors in This Success?

• Opening of the Second Runway
Around this time last year, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport’s second runway (06R–24L) became fully operational, with landings also permitted in the 24L direction. This development significantly increased the airport’s operational efficiency.

• New Metro Line
Access to Sabiha Gökçen Airport used to be extremely difficult. The metro line ended in Pendik, and the remaining journey was often exhausting, with passengers relying on municipal buses. Despite multiple stops, the extension of the metro line made airport access far easier and more comfortable.

• AnadoluJet Becoming AJet
AnadoluJet previously operated as a more tightly integrated subsidiary of Turkish Airlines. AJet remains affiliated but now operates with a different vision. The rebranding has given the airline a new identity, contributing to the airport’s growth and increasing passenger numbers. Its future projects are expected to further strengthen Sabiha Gökçen’s position.

• New Airlines Operating at the Airport
Sabiha Gökçen Airport management consistently works to attract new airlines, and does so successfully. The presence of high-quality airlines and flag carriers has enhanced the airport’s visibility and strengthened its position in terms of air traffic and global recognition.
