Virgin Atlantic is taking major strides to elevate its onboard experience, unveiling a series of ambitious upgrades, from free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi to revamped business-class cabins and luxurious airport lounges.
At an exclusive event in London, attended by frequent flyers, media, and airline executives, Virgin outlined its vision to transform air travel with a focus on comfort, technology, and premium service.
Starlink Wi-Fi Across the Fleet by 2027
In partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Virgin will begin equipping its entire fleet with Starlink satellite connectivity starting Q3 2026. The roll-out is expected to complete by the end of 2027, offering free, fast internet access for all passengers. Travelers need a Flying Club loyalty account to connect, no matter their seat or device.
This move positions Virgin as the first UK airline to adopt Starlink, following a global trend led by airlines like United and Qatar Airways.
Expanding Business-Class and Premium Seating
Virgin is also addressing the growing demand for upscale travel, especially from hubs like London Heathrow. The airline will introduce a new seat configuration on its A330-900neos, adding:
-
6 Retreat Suites (ultra-spacious business class)
-
42 Upper Class pods (business class)
-
56 Premium recliners (premium economy)
-
128 economy seats
Compared to the existing setup, this represents a significant boost in premium seating, over 400 additional business-class seats daily across key routes to the US, including New York and Miami.
Dreamliner Makeover Coming in 2028
Virgin’s aging Boeing 787-9 fleet will undergo a full cabin retrofit beginning in 2028. The updated layout will feature:
-
8 Retreat Suites
-
36 Upper Class pods
-
56 Premium seats
-
127 Economy seats
This marks the first time Retreat Suites will appear on a non-A330 aircraft, and the business-class seat will mirror the airline’s modern A330neo cabin, featuring privacy doors and refined design.
Lounge Upgrades and AI Concierge
The airline will also revamp its flagship Clubhouse lounges in London and New York, with multimillion-pound investments planned to modernize the spaces. Details remain under wraps.
Virgin will introduce a new mobile app this December and launch an AI concierge powered by OpenAI and Tomoro.ai, allowing travelers to receive real-time assistance.
Loyalty and Amenities Refresh
Virgin plans to introduce new loyalty tiers for long-time customers and refresh its amenity kits with products from UK skincare brand Votary in 2025.
Bottom Line: Virgin Atlantic is placing a bold bet on premium travel, with innovations aimed at both business and leisure passengers. Even travelers in economy can look forward to free Wi-Fi, while premium flyers will enjoy enhanced comfort and service. Whether this strategy pays off long term remains to be seen, but it certainly signals Virgin’s intention to lead in luxury.
