Turkish Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler and UK Secretary of State for Defence John Healey have signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding regarding Türkiye’s inclusion as a Eurofighter Typhoon user. Speaking after the signing ceremony, Minister Güler expressed his pleasure in hosting Healey in Türkiye.
Güler emphasized the deep-rooted historical ties and strong relations between Türkiye and the UK, stating that they aim to further strengthen bilateral relations as a reflection of these bonds.
He noted that they held productive and constructive consultations during their meeting on the occasion of IDEF 2025, adding:
“In our meeting where we reaffirmed the strategic partnership between our countries, including cooperation under NATO, we highlighted the importance of our long-standing defense collaboration and the growing ties in the defense industry and security. We also committed to deepening our strategic partnership in support of our mutual deterrence.”
“The memorandum brings us one step closer to a comprehensive agreement.”
Minister Güler stated that one of the key topics discussed was the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, and continued:
“Türkiye’s acceptance as a Eurofighter Typhoon user will further strengthen the bonds of friendship among NATO’s key allies, enhance our country’s air capabilities, thereby also strengthening NATO’s air power, bolster cooperation in capability development, and mark the beginning of a new era supporting both nations’ defense industries through mutual acquisition of world-class equipment. The memorandum of understanding we signed today brings us one step closer to a full agreement on the Eurofighter Typhoon.”
Minister Güler expressed his satisfaction with this positive step toward Türkiye’s inclusion in the Eurofighter Typhoon community and added:
“I would like to once again emphasize our joint determination to finalize the necessary arrangements as soon as possible.”
Ministry of Defense: A significant step
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MSB) also shared a statement on social media regarding the memorandum:
“The Ministers of Defense of the Republic of Türkiye and the United Kingdom were pleased to meet today at the 17th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) held in Istanbul, reaffirming the strength of the Türkiye-UK partnership. They emphasized the importance of the long-standing defense cooperation between the two countries, including collaboration through NATO, and their growing ties in the defense industry and security. Both Ministers committed to deepening this strategic partnership in support of the Alliance’s collective deterrence.”
The statement continued:
“Both countries continue to make significant progress on the export of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. Türkiye’s recognition as a Typhoon user would further strengthen long-standing bonds of friendship among NATO’s key allies and mark a major step forward in enhancing Türkiye’s advanced combat air capabilities. This development will also mark the beginning of a new era in the UK–Türkiye partnership, strengthening capability collaboration and supporting both countries’ defense industries through the mutual acquisition of world-class equipment.”
The statement concluded:
“Today, the Ministers signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding. This document formalizes the relationship between the two countries and brings them one step closer to a comprehensive agreement on the Typhoon. Both Ministers welcomed this signature as a positive step toward Türkiye’s inclusion in the Typhoon community and share a mutual goal of concluding the necessary arrangements as soon as possible.”
