The Basilica of Lake İznik, often referred to as the “sunken basilica,” is one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries of recent decades, located in today’s Türkiye. Believed to date back to the 4th or 5th century, the basilica lies partly submerged beneath the waters of Lake İznik and is considered a significant site for early Christianity. Its historical and spiritual value has made it a focal point for both scholars and faith tourism.

Against this backdrop, a delegation of 42 professors from France’s École des Bernardins recently visited İznik, Türkiye, for a series of cultural and historical explorations. The program began with a tour of the iconic Hagia Sophia Orhan Mosque, followed by a special mass held at the ancient Basilica by Lake İznik.

The ceremony, performed on a specially prepared platform by the lakeshore, drew considerable attention from both participants and the local community. The visit highlighted İznik’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance.

It was also noted that Pope Leo XIV, who was recently elected, is expected to visit the Basilica in November, further underscoring İznik’s growing importance as a destination for faith tourism.
