The first phase of Dalaman Airport’s Solar Energy System, completed in 2024, already ranks as the world’s largest solar power plant built on an airport terminal roof, supplying around 55% of the airport’s annual energy needs. The second phase of the project has now begun, and once completed in March 2026, Dalaman will become the first airport to meet 100% of its energy demand from solar power.
Dalaman Airport has been operated by YDA since 2006. In 2022, to elevate the airport to the next level, a strategic partnership was established with Ferrovial, one of Spain’s leading infrastructure companies, which acquired a 60% stake in the airport’s operating rights. This partnership between YDA, one of Turkey’s most established companies, and Ferrovial has created a strong synergy, leading to numerous new projects and achievements since 2022.
One of the first actions was to revise the airport’s vision statement to align with the new strategy:
“To operate a safe, secure, and sustainable airport that delivers the highest-quality, stress-free customer experience powered by innovation on the Turkish Riviera.”
In line with this vision, many initiatives and projects were implemented.
After the pandemic, Dalaman became one of the fastest airports in Europe to return to 2019 levels, reaching a 92% recovery rate. It then increased its 2022 passenger figure of 4.6 million by another 1 million within just two years, marking a 25% growth and closing last year with 5.6 million passengers. In 2023, Dalaman Airport welcomed its 5 millionth passenger for the first time in its history.
Serving a coastline of over 1,000 km of stunning natural beauty, Dalaman Airport aims to become one of the greenest airports in Turkey and the world. With this vision, the airport launched its Solar Energy Project as part of its sustainability strategy. Once the second phase is complete in 2026, Dalaman will proudly stand as the first airport entirely powered by the sun.
