Türkiye’s defense industry has undergone a transformation in recent years that has drawn attention not only regionally but globally. One of the brightest symbols of this transformation is, without a doubt, the unmanned aerial systems developed by Baykar, and their most ambitious step to date: Bayraktar Kızılelma.
As a retired aviator, I would like to briefly outline how the Bayraktar legacy was born, with what vision Kızılelma emerged, and how its achievements today are leaving a mark on global aviation history.
The Birth of Bayraktar: When a Dream Took Wing
The story of the Bayraktar UAV and UCAV projects began in the early 2000s with a small R&D team. At a time when unmanned aerial systems were only just entering global discussions, Baykar was among the few pioneers working in this field in Türkiye.
Under the leadership of Selçuk Bayraktar, engineering passion, software development capability, and a strong system-integration vision came together. What started with mini UAVs soon evolved into tactical platforms and eventually armed unmanned aerial vehicles.
Bayraktar TB2 became a turning point not only for Türkiye but also internationally. With proven operational success, indigenous munition integration, and high reliability, TB2 quickly became one of the most demanded UCAV systems in the world.
This success provided Baykar with the momentum needed for a far more ambitious vision: stepping into the fighter aircraft domain.
The Emergence of Kızılelma: The Fighter Aircraft of the Future
Developed under the motto “The future lies in unmanned fighter aircraft,” Bayraktar Kızılelma opened a new chapter in Türkiye’s aviation history.
Rather than a conventional UCAV, Kızılelma is categorized as an unmanned fighter aircraft. It was designed with high speed, low radar signature, advanced artificial intelligence, air-to-air combat capability, and the ability to operate from aircraft carriers.
ASELSAN’s electronic systems, TÜBİTAK SAGE’s munitions, the coordination of the Presidency of Defence Industries, and experiential feedback from the Turkish Armed Forces all played critical roles in the project. This multi-stakeholder ecosystem reflects Türkiye’s National Technology Initiative approach to unmanned systems.
Kızılelma’s Achievements: Another First in Aviation History
Kızılelma has rapidly evolved beyond being just a prototype, emerging as a platform with high operational capability. After extensive test flights, maneuverability trials, and system integrations, it recently achieved another milestone that resonated strongly within the global aviation community:
A successful beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile engagement.
This test represents a world first, not only for Türkiye, but for aviation history as a whole.
An unmanned fighter aircraft destroying a target beyond visual range using an air-to-air missile sends a powerful signal about how future combat doctrines will evolve. With this achievement, Kızılelma has demonstrated that it can:
-
Reduce the operational burden on manned fighter aircraft
-
Eliminate human risk in high-threat missions
-
Add a new dimension to air-to-air combat concepts
In short, Türkiye is now positioned not only as a leader in UCAVs but as a central player in the race toward next-generation unmanned fighter aircraft.
A Nation’s Technology Journey
The Bayraktar family and Kızılelma represent more than engineering success; they are symbols of vision, belief, and a national technology movement.
These platforms, developed with domestic capabilities, are not just major steps toward independent defense capacity, but also strong candidates to shape the future of aerial warfare.
Today, Kızılelma soaring in the skies is the tangible result of a small R&D step taken years ago, a great dream, and the determination of a committed team. Watching Baykar build Kızılelma made this clearer than ever to me.
As a citizen and a retired aviator, I extend my sincere thanks to Selçuk Bayraktar, the Bayraktar family, the Turkish Armed Forces, the Presidency of Defence Industries, ASELSAN, TÜBİTAK SAGE, and all Baykar employees.
And we know this story is only just beginning, with you at its center.
