Amsterdam Schiphol Becomes the First Airport to Use Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles

Amsterdam Schiphol, one of Europe’s most important airports, has become a world leader in the use of hydrogen-powered vehicles for apron operations. The airport made history as the first major international hub to deploy hydrogen-powered vehicles in its daily operations. This groundbreaking initiative includes a specially designed pushback tug (aircraft towing vehicle) and a prototype Toyota pick-up truck equipped with a hydrogen-powered electric engine.

In support of these vehicles, Schiphol has also installed a temporary hydrogen refueling station on-site. This pilot project marks a significant step toward the airport’s goal of achieving emission-free ground operations by 2030.

Hydrogen-powered vehicles have already been integrated into Schiphol’s daily flight operations. The pushback tug is being tested on KLM’s B737 aircraft, performing multiple services per day—towing aircraft between parking stands, hangars, taxiways, and gates.

Meanwhile, the hydrogen-powered pick-up truck supports the Bird Control team, whose task is to keep birds away from runways to ensure safety.
